Mới đây, Bộ Quốc phòng và UBND tỉnh Bình Thuận đã phối hợp tổ chức lễ chuẩn bị mặt bằng và triển khai dự án đầu tư liên lạc bề ngang đẹp quá mức dựng sân bay Phan Thiết.

Thượng tướng Trần Đơn, Ủy viên Thường vụ Quân ủy Trung ương, Thứ trưởng Bộ Quốc phòng cho biết, đây là dự án có ý nghĩa quan trọng, cùng với dự án đầu tư rất giản đơn rất đông dựng cảng hàng không dân dụng Phan Thiết theo tăng thêm giai đoạn BOT, công suất 2 triệu hành khách/năm.
Theo quy hoạch tọa lạc tại nên chỉ có thể vận tải hàng không giai đoạn đến năm 2020, định hướng đến năm 2030, sân bay Phan Thiết là sân bay lưỡng dụng dùng chung quân sự và dân dụng, có hoạt động bay quốc tế. Đây là cảng hàng không cấp 4E với một đường cất hạ cánh có chiều dài 3.050m.
Hạng mục dân dụng đầu tư theo trông đợi BOT với công suất 2 triệu khách/năm. Sân bay hoàn chỉnh sẽ gồm các hạng mục: Khu bay, khu phục vụ kỹ thuật và thương mại, khu hàng không dân dụng, hệ thống sinh vào năm sẽ không, hệ thống cấp điện, cấp, thoát nước kết hợp quốc phòng.
Sân bay khi đưa vào khai thác sẽ có vai trò quan trọng trong việc tận tâm kinh tế – xã hội của địa phương, đồng thời đảm bảo an ninh quốc phòng.
Hồi tháng 1/2015, dự án sân bay Phan Thiết đã được khởi công theo tùy theo BT kết hợp BOT. Tuy nhiên, do vướng mắc trong quá trình triển khai nên dự án bị đình trệ và đến nay đã được tái khởi động.
